Vintage Treasure Hunting

I love hunting for treasure...not pirate treasure..though I would probably hunt for that too if given a map!

I love hunting for little bits of history and taking them home to live with me.  Second hand shops, vintage malls, antique fairs, yard sales...  If there are piles of other people's stuff that they don't want I'm there!
I've been lucky enough to find a few gems lately and just had to share they with you.

One of my favorite spots in Paris to shop for odd items is at Emmaus.  Emmaus is essentially the French equivalent to say..a Salvation Army shop.  They are a charity shop and they have a handful of shops within the city limits but all my best finds (among them a vintage picnic set, vintage lingerie, a most recent a fab vanity set) have been at the ones that lie in the city's suburbs.
I went rummaging with my friend a while back and found this lovely vanity set!  I have always, ALWAYS wanted a pretty silver vanity set.  Something about them is so girly and glamorous and I've been hunting for one for years.  I've come across many in my search, some missing a comb or brush or with a broken mirror or in plastic or just somehow lacking that something special that made it perfect.  But my luck turned when I saw this fabulous set on the back of a shelf in it's box and in perfect condition.
vintage silver vanity set, silver brush, comb, mirror via lexi derock's voluptuous vintage vixen

The set is actually not that old as the box says it's from 1984 which makes it just as old as myself (ie not very old as I just said ;) and is not full silver but silver plated.  Even so it is a beautiful set that is just what I have wanted!  It's got a lovely weight to it and I love the floral motif.
I picked these lovelies up for a mere 10€!  A steal if I do say so myself!
I think I may need to have it monogrammed!

My next find is one I was VERY excited about!  This beautiful vintage silver lipstick tube by Marcel Rochas Paris, made in France and is a design created in 1944.
The design is called "Femme" and it's a black Chantilly lace motif that is so intricate and beautiful.

I've only found a handful of these from this designer online on Etsy and eBay shops and they go for a pretty penny so when I found this one amongst a box of random odds and ends at a vintage street market in Versailles for a measly 5€ I snapped it up nice and proper!
I intend to clean it out and put new lipstick in it and give it new life!  I will put together a how to for that once I find the perfect shade!

Lastly is a favorite piece of mine that I found at a vintage mall for 10 bucks!
It is a beautiful compact made by the English company Stratton.

It's a lovely stained glass design with a pretty star patter all around the back.
I fell in love with all the colors and have had it in my bag ever since.

Inside it has a tray and mesh to hold your powder and puff.  The glass is cracked but that is easily fixable and a concession I am willing to make when the rest of the piece is so perfect!

Well, thanks for letting me share (and maybe brag a little) all my wonderful finds!
What is your favorite vintage find?  Where did you get it?  What makes it so special?

Delta Burke

I have always enjoyed Delta since growing up watching designing women.  The witty back and forth between her and Dixie Carter alone made the show worth watch for me.
With big ole hair (the bigger the hair the closer to god) and and a big ole smile Delta just drips with all kinds of southern charm.

The buxom beauty started out as (surprise, surprise) a beauty queen and made her way into television and film work.  Over the years she battled her waist line and yo-yoed up and down a bit but in the end she not only accepted her curvy figure but went on to create one of the most successful and enduring plus size womens clothing lines.

Costume Review of Hitchcock

I wanted to have a terribly productive Sunday..but then again I also wanted to veg out and watch movies and generally laze about on one of my very rare days off before the hectic work week began and so decided to mix a little work and pleasure and flopped down to watch the film Hitchcock.
I haven't actually seen many Hitchcock films truth be told..sure I've seen the big classics like Birds, Psycho, and Rear Window (and the horrible remakes of the last two) but I have to say, while I love old movies, the suspense and thriller genre leaves me a bit bored more often than not.  Historical fiction though tends to please me and the cast of this film made is seem worth a watch so I thought I'd give a little review of the fabulous ladies fashions the film had on offer.

Miss Helen Mirren is one of my all time favorites and she was as always a treat to watch and stunning to look at.  Early in the film she wears this lovely beige dress.  It's a super cute wiggle style dress that I would be thrilled to add to my wardrobe and it hugs Ms Mirren's gorgeous figure in just the right ways.
Sorry I couldn't find a better pic, but this one does the job.  Love the wrapped up front and three quarter length sleeves and of course as a lady she's got matching gloves and handbag.  Love!
Helen's character also sports a super cute red vintage style swim suit much like the green vintage suit I showcased last week, though sadly I couldn't find any pics of it online.

Next on screen was Miss Toni Collette.
I do enjoy Toni in most everything I've seen her in and this was another good role for her.
The first scene of the film has her rocking late 50's business chic and a pair of cat eyed glasses that make me excited about the day I will someday need a pair (it's inevitable folks) but for now I am happy just to oooh and ahhh over other people's fabulous frames...hell I may even spring for a fancy chain like hers :)
She also has fabulous hair...I've been growing mine out for some time now, but I do love shorter styles like these and she wears it so well!

Scarlett Johansson makes her first appearance on screen as the actress Janet Leigh in a stunning champagne colored satin evening gown.  The dress fits her curves in exactly the right way and I love the haltered neckline with the beautiful draping at the bust.  Glam, glam, glam!
Scarlet Johansson in Hitchcock via Lexi DeRock of Voluptuous Vintage Vixen

Jessica Biel's character complains about her wardrobe in the film, but personally I love it!  This beige dress with it's full skirt and belted waist creates a beautifully feminine figure and I love the button details and cute Peter Pan collar.  From where I'm standing she doesn't have much to complain about!

I have to say for me this film was as good as any Hitchcock film I've seen...hmmm, maybe I should see a few more...

Miss Fishel was the heroine and love interest for many many (maybe even a few too many) years while the show was on air.
And apparently we haven't heard the last from Boy Meets World ( a possible sequel in the works) nor have we heard the last from Topanga!

How To Refill A Vintage Lipstick

$

Hello all!  So a while back you may remember my posting that I had found a fab vintage silver lipstick tube case at an antique brocante.
And as promised I am going to show you how I refilled it in case you want to do the same.
There are a couple great tutorials online on how to fill a vintage lipstick using a pre-existing lipstick like this one from Brittany at Va-Voom Vintage.  And that is a perfect step-by-step guide if the vintage lipstick tube you want to fill fits standard modern lipstick.
Unfortunately, many vintage lipsticks were shorter and smaller around than most modern day lipstick and so it's not always easy to get a great fit without squishing your lipstick.
As you may or may not know there is a whole heap of lipstick left in the tube once you've used it down to the bottom of where it normally twists up to and I, not being a girl who ever wants to waste makeup always scrape out what is left and keep it in a palette.
So I decided to try melting down some of my lipstick leftovers to make a new tube but you could also use a new tube if you have a color you really like but it is too big to fit your vintage case.
Now that's what I call recycling!!
How to refill a vintage lipstick via Lexi DeRock at Voluptuous Vinatge Vixen
keeping your leftover lipstick in a palette is a great way not to waste any, not so practical for when out and about but great for applying at home with a brush.
The tricky part was figuring out how to get the lipstick into a tube shape that would be a perfect fit for my vintage case.  After a bit of initial humming and ha-ing I decided to make a sleeve out of normal kitchen parchment paper.  I think waxed paper might work a tiny bit better in the future but as I didn't have any in the house I used normal baking sheet paper and it worked like a charm.
I first cleaned out the tube thoroughly with warm soapy water and heaps of baby wipes and cotton buds until it wash sparkling clean without a trace of any old lipstick or gunk.

Then I rolled the parchment paper into a tube shape using the handle of a spoon to give it form and put a piece of packing tape around it to hold it all together once I had it the right size.  I fit the parchment paper into the base of the tube to gauge the size and from there with a little fiddling and patience I got the parchment paper to exactly the right size.

A bit of parchment paper, a spoon and some packing tape were all I needed to make my mould
How to refill a vintage lipstick via Lexi DeRock at Voluptuous Vinatge Vixen
Make sure the tube fits flush with the base of the tube or it will wobble if it is too small or not fit in if it is too big.
Next I used a double boiler system to melt down the lipstick without overheating it.
Maybe you could microwave it, but I used this method since I didn't want to risk burning the lipstick and it worked like a charm.
How to refill a vintage lipstick via Lexi DeRock at Voluptuous Vinatge Vixen
Be sure to use something shallow and narrow so you don't end up wasting lipstick coating the surface of something like a bowl.
Okay, it was a tad messy, but not too bad.

I chose to use a glass shot glass with a deep base so that the glass wouldn't actually be in the boiling water and melted the lipstick down until it turned into a liquid stirring it with a wooden chopstick till it was all smooth.

Then I poured the melted lipstick into the tube of parchment paper (no pic of the pour as it required both hands to do leaving me unable to snap a photo, but pretty self explanitory I hope) and popped the tube in the freezer for about an hour until it was nice and solid.
How to refill a vintage lipstick via Lexi DeRock at Voluptuous Vinatge Vixen
Mmmm minty
Once the lipstick seemed really solid I took the tube of parchment with the lipstick in it out of the vintage case and carefully unrolled it.
How to refill a vintage lipstick via Lexi DeRock at Voluptuous Vinatge Vixen
Be sure to use a piece of parchment paper to hold the lipstick otherwise you'll get finger prints on it and also lipstick all over your fingers.
Holding the lipstick with a piece of parchment paper I heated the bottom of the lipstick briefly with a lighter just so it would liquefy a tad so it would stick better when I pushed it into the base of the lipstick tube.
How to refill a vintage lipstick via Lexi DeRock at Voluptuous Vinatge Vixen
Pretty darn good for home made if I do say so myself :)

Over all I am really happy with the way this turned out.
Hope this helps you if you decide to do this on your own.

Let me know how it goes!

I was feeling a bit nostalgic today... Not for the clothes and styles of yesteryear so much as for the joys of my youth.  One of those such joys was Miss Janeane Garafalo.
Ever since I was a kid and I saw Reality Bites (at an age to young to understand it in the slightest) I thought she was the bees knees.  The film itself is one I love and the My Sharona dance scene is probably my fav in the whole film.

Of course she was on SNL but she was also a delightfully darkly funny actress to watch in things like The Larry Sanders Show and her standup tickled me.

Loving the Betty bangs and retro duds her character wore in Reality Bites...me thinks it might suit her again :)
What about you?  Have a fav Janeane flick?  Truth about cats and dogs?  Romy and Michelle?  The one I can never remember the name of where she goes to Ireland to help the townspeople build a mountain?

Oooooof Daaang people!  It has been a crizazy month!
June kicked my butt with so much work and kept me from you as much as I would have liked but now I'm back and I have all kinds of fun stuff to share with you!

First up!  Gabi Fresh Tankini's.
What did I tell you folks!?
Back in May when I wrote my piece on my top 5 vintage swimwear picks  I told you that Gabi Fresh had a new line of swimwear coming out through Swimsuitsforall.com and that you better keep your eyes peeled for the launch date.  Well if you blinked then you missed it!
Gabbi's line is a total hit! The Galaxy print tankini sold out so fast the computer couldn't even keep track of how many they sold and misinformed people that they had more than they did in stock, leaving some very dissapointed shoppers.
Guess it just goes to show that the laws of supply and demand work.   If you supply something awesome to people who are demanding it you'll sell the crap out of some pretty rad bikinis.

Breathing In The Past: A Guide To Vintage Perfume For A Modern Gal

I love perfume and vintage and surprise surprise, I love vintage perfume!
My very good friend Alicia LeBlanc is a perfume lover and avid collector and was lovley enough to share a few tips from her vast wealth of knowledge to help you on your vintage perfume journey to find your perfect scent to transport you back in time.
Enjoy!

"Perfume can be a powerful element in vintage aesthetics.  If you’ve never considered perfume to be a part of the vintage lifestyle – or perhaps not beyond the beautiful old bottles – I’m here to tell you that it’s time to start sniffing.

Caron's Tabac Blond vintage perfume via Lexi DeRock on Voluptuous Vintage Vixen

Only scent can so effectively burst open a door to the past, allowing you to experience the atmosphere of a bygone era.  An inhale of Dior Poison and you’re surrounded by women with big 80s hair; take in Caron’s Tabac Blond and feel the exhilaration of a 1920s woman breaking social taboo by smoking in public.  Your grandmother’s perfume, your father’s cologne…can you smell them without being transported to a world of memories?

Use that portal to your advantage by conjuring up your favored era’s olfactory landscape.  The right perfume trails history along with it; a vintage look is simply not complete without a great scent.

Granted, not all history has aged as well as it could.  Although you can mostly ignore that Sephora salesperson claiming that perfumes go bad after a year, it is true that nothing lasts forever.  Sometimes the substances used in perfumes – vintage or modern – were cheap or unstable.  Sometimes the bottle was kept in the bathroom where the twin enemies of light and temperature fluctuations have spoiled the scent.  Sometimes you just smell something, even intact, and can’t imagine why anyone would ever have wanted to smell like that.

For a vintage perfume lover, there are two major thrills of the hunt: finding out-of-production fragrances and finding older versions of scents that are still in production but have undergone (sometimes major) reformulations.  In the latter case, as tastes and access to resources have changed over the years, you may discover that a vintage version of a perfume has little in common with the modern version you know.

Miss Dior was a whole different lady back in 1947, as was most of the Dior family.  In vintage Guerlain Mitsouko, the velvety oakmoss has a depth and carnality that is absent from today’s version (a monumental tragedy to vintage Mitsouko lovers like myself), due to restrictive regulations on oakmoss.  Among those perfumes that haven’t been produced for many years, one of my favorites is Balenciaga’s Le Dix, an elegant aldehyde whose restraint always charmed me more than No. 5 ever could.

When shopping for vintage perfumes, there are a few things to keep in mind.  Here are some tips:

Many modern perfumes have packed their entire punch into the top notes (what you smell during the first 10-30 minutes of wearing a scent) because modern shoppers often decide to buy a perfume based on the first sniff.  This is a bad habit; try not to buy anything that you haven’t tried on your skin for at least 20 minutes so that you know what the heart notes – the ones that usually stick around for a few hours – smell like.  Top notes are the most volatile (that is why you smell them first, as they float off of your skin), and many vintage perfumes’ top notes are damaged. This isn’t a problem.  Just wait for the heart and base notes to settle in and you’ll be amazed at how wonderfully the soul of your fragrance has survived over time.

Pay attention to the packaging.  A perfume that is still sealed or kept in its box has a lesser chance of suffering from evaporation or distortion from exposure to light (although there are still no guarantees that evaporation hasn’t occurred, even for sealed in-box perfumes).  If unboxed, does the bottle still have its topper?  Toppers also help to block out air and prevent evaporation.

If the liquid seems thick or there are things floating in it (especially for an opened splash bottle, those things may be skin flakes from the previous owner), it may have turned…although there’s no way to know for sure without smelling it.

Once you’ve found your vintage treasures, store them away from light and heat.  Yes, I know you want to display the elegant bottles, but you can do so once they’ve been emptied by your enjoyment of their contents.

And do enjoy them without restraint!  You never know when a perfume might turn, so best to revel in it while it’s still gorgeous.

A note on fabrics: be careful when you’re applying perfume, as some fabrics, particularly delicate vintage silks, can be stained.

And remember to have fun.  Yes, perfumery is an ancient art form with a pedigree and rules and professionals who are paid to have an opinion, but it’s meant to be enjoyed."
