Georgina Horne is a stunning plus size model and this is one of my all time favorite photographs of her by the photographer Velvet D'Amour for Vol Up 2 Magazine.  She is all kinds of vintage glamour!
She is a definite wealth of knowledge when it comes to bra's and undergarments.
Here is a great video she did on bra fits.

She has a fab website called Fuller Figure Fuller Bust where she gives her help and point of view on how and where to shop for the fuller figured gal.

Gorgeous Headpieces For The Vintage Loving Bride
An Interview With Jo Barnes

I come across a lot of different styles of head wear while doing hair and makeup for brides.  Some want to keep it simple with nothing at all and leave the hair to be the main event, for others it's flowers or a veil.  Recently though I have been noticing a lot of vintage style headpieces.  Beautiful bits of crystal and glass, beads and silver on combs or headbands and I just love them.  I also noticed that many of them were being created by the same amazingly talented woman.  Wanting to know a bit more about their maker I got in touch with the lovely Miss Jo Barnes and got her two cents on vintage wedding fashion, what inspires her and tips for vintage loving brides.  Here's what she had to say.

Lexi DeRock:   What sparked your interest in vintage fashions?

Jo Barnes:  I have always adored anything vintage since I was a young girl. The fashions were charming and elegant and the ladies glamorous. I love the clothing and the beautiful jewellery of these eras so it is a dream come true to be able to have a business doing something I love and have such passion for.

LD:   Do you have a favourite design of yours?

JB:  I really couldn’t decide on one, my favourite designs would have to be Hepburn, Charlie, Frankie, Freida and Iris I love these ones and I also love Gardenia, Alvina, Harmony and Bette from the Red Carpet collection.

LD:  What specifically draws you to designing pieces for brides?

JB:  Fashions of the 1920s and 1930s are a big inspiration, my new collection is called “The Chandelier” collection inspired by the 1920s which I think will be one of my favourite collections to date!!! I can’t wait to launch this in April/May time. I also get ideas from the latest bridal collections trying to bring in these details to compliment the designs, I LOVE Claire Pettibone and she was my inspiration behind the latest honey collection because of the wonderful use of colour in her gowns.

LD:  What has been the most challenging part of starting your own business and what is the greatest reward?

JB:  It was hard staring up after creating my own bridal bouquet and headdress for my big day, I knew I had a flare for it and all my friends said I should set up in business, already an owner of a Payroll bureau which I had been running for 2 years and was still trying to build up I had a bit of spare time so I sold my brand new Mini cooper (I was very sad about this I had worked hard to get this beauty!!!) the profit I made from that which was only around £900-£1000 I invested in lots of vintage brooches, crystals and various other materials and signed up to do my first wedding fair and that’s basically all I had to set Jo Barnes up!! It was a real struggle and without the support of my wonderful hubby I could not have done it, but it paid off and Jo Barnes has become a well sought after name in the bridal industry not just in the UK but worldwide and winning the 2012 Wedding Industry award was just a dream come true, this really gave me the confidence to grow my business further which I am continuing to do.

LD:  If you had one tip for brides trying to choose a headpiece online what would your advice be?

JB: I would say always buy your dress first and then try and pick out detail from your gown and choose a headdress with that detailing in to compliment it. So if a bridal gown has pearls in it maybe have a few pearls in your headdress or ask for my advice hehe!!!

LD:  When working on your Bespoke designs using peoples own heirlooms and pieces have you come across any interesting stories of where the pieces came from and what makes them special to the bride?

JB:  I have created several headdresses and bouquets using the bride’s heirlooms and I love creating these special pieces. I have just created a bouquet incorporating the mother of the brides veil she wore on her big day, another headdress I made with a string of pearls belonging to the brides Grandmother who had passed away and for my friend I took her Mums 1970s bridal headdress apart and re worked it with vintage brooches. For my very own bouquet I added all my Nana’s brooches and my Granddad’s cufflinks which was very special to me as I felt that they were with me on my big day.

A big thanks to Jo for the interview!
Be sure to check out her site if you are looking for the extra something to complete your wedding look!

Ken's Aunt is a smokin' hottie!!!

So just out of curiosities sake I was wondering if there were any plus size dolls for girls and who did I stumble upon but Ciotka Hena!
The name literally translates to Ken's Aunt and was made for the Polish market.
With her sky high high 60's hair, bangin' curves and super cute vintage looking girdle I must say this Barbie is right up my alley!
Unfortunately the doll was apparently only made in a limited edition and is not available in the market today!
Super sad face right!!?
I betcha if these babies were out on shelves they'd have a hard time keeping them in stock.

I WANT I WANT I WANT

I haven't actually seen any clothes that fit this doll...so in theory Ciotka Hena just lounges about all day in gorgeous hair and lingerie and doesn't actually leave the house.
Hmmm Maybe I should move to Poland.

Ohhhh Myyyy Woooord!! So Many lovely ladies submitted their photos and thoughts on vintage beauty, fashion and body positivity this month.  So many gorgeous vintage loving ladies took the time to send in their stunning pics and tell me what makes them Voluptuous Vintage Vixen's...but alas I could only select one VVV to become the VVV of the month and take home a copy of my vintage hair and makeup book Decades Of Style a step by step guide to looks of the 1960's and 1970's and that lovely lady this month is......drummm rooooolll...

Miss February...

Gemma Cullen!

"What I love about Vintage, well at least the 1940's and 50's that I wear, is the ability to be classy, feminine and sexy at the same time. The clothes of the 1940's and 50's were meant to be worn on a woman with curves. Anyone can feel amazing in vintage or reproduction clothes, and I certainly do. I now wear vintage and reproduction clothes from the mid 1930's to the mid 1940's about 98% of my time, I even go to the supermarket in them!
I'm a voluptuous vintage vixen because I eat, sleep and dream vintage, I'm a confident curvy, beautiful freelance professional vintage pinup model. I love corsets and stockings, and I am very proud of my body and my curves and hopefully by modelling the last year I have encouraged other girls/women with curves to feel beautiful and confident about themselves. I hope that my work has bought the world of vintage to those who are not part of the vintage scene and maybe made some love vintage as much as I do."

Every month I will be giving away one copy to the winner of the VVV contest...could next months winner be you?
IT COULD!!

Much congrats to Miss Gemma Cullen..I'll be in touch shortly to get your details and send off your copy of Decades Of Style!  Don't forget ladies that this is an ongoing contest with a chance to win every month and there is no number of times you are allowed to enter so please keep on sending in your amazing pics and wonderful stories!!

Luna DeLovely

"My love of vintage began from about age 14/15 I was scouring the thrift shops in a bid to find beautiful, original and well made clothes. Gorgeous one off finds that no one else had, my own little treasures whether it be a beautiful piece of bakelite jewellery, or a fur collared harris tweed overcoat!
I always enjoyed experimenting with different looks, make up, hair, and styling of clothes, I proudly earned myself the title of weirdo by the time I was in 5th form (believe me retro wasn't accepted all too well in those days, it was after all the late eighties very early nineties...yes I am 38!!, 39 in December)
I discovered how flattering 30s/40s style Oxford bags were thrown together with a mans shirt, not to mention how sassy and saucy a well fitting pair of flares are. Throw into that the gorgeous silhouette an authentic 50s wiggle dress gives you, it is hard to see why you'd shop for anything else. It's a bit of a cliche, but they really don't make clothes like they used to.  For me a 'vintage look' conjures up one of two things... sass and class, or fun and quirk.
There is nothing quite so delicious as donning a pair of seamed stockings, slipping a vintage tea dress over your girdle, whilst trying not to ruin you're red lipstick or pull your pin curls out of place :)
What makes me a vintage vixen? I just never grew out of the dressing up box!"

London Plus Size Fashion Weekend

British Beauty Goes Big

Go big or go home...at least that's what I think they say...
The Brit's made mega strides last week that I want to give props to for the first ever Plus Size Fashion Weekend in the UK!

Was vintage fashion on the roster...meh, not so much but that is really besides the point.  The fact that the event even happened at all the the fashion climate that we live in is a boon to bootilicious ladies everywhere!
Gorgeous models from all over the world stomped the runways showing off the latest in plus size designers but also showing that women of all shapes an sizes are not only beautiful but deserve a moment in the spot light and not to be ignored by designers, retailers and advertisers.

Considering that the average woman living in the UK is a UK size 16 (US size 12-14) you would think that more designers would be clamoring to sell their wares to the largest group of people with money burning a hole in their pockets...it just makes business sense folks!!
Anyhooo enough of a rant for now, the point is two thumbs up, A++, Gold Star, raise the roof etc and so forth to all those involved in putting on the London Plus Size Fashion Weekend!  Here's hoping that some day they'll get a whole week like the rest of the fashion world!

Voluptuous Vintage Vixen Of The Day: Autumn Breeze

Autumn Breeze

"I've always been interested in vintage fashion and Old Hollywood glamour, but I didn't start dressing the part until began researching for my vintage-themed wedding. I found so many wonderful online resources for women who were into vintage style, and as I watched the hair and makeup tutorials and started ordering the pinup clothes, I slowly gained the confidence to style myself in sort of a 40's-50's hybrid fashion. I began wearing this style to work, and the compliments started pouring in! There is just some magical allure about this golden age. Whether the look is flirtatious and sweet, polished and feminine, or sultry and smoldering, midcentury style so classic, so elegant, and so timeless.
The pinup look certainly lends itself well to flattering us curvy girls. When I was younger, I was very uncomfortable with my curves and often wound up hiding them. It didn't help that the fashions of the time were quite boxy and unflattering. Then I discovered the pinup style and made it my own. I gained so much more confidence and became proud of my curves for the first time. That's not to say I don't still find fault with my figure and appearance; every woman does. But I have become happy in my skin.
I even managed to screw up the courage to do a pinup shoot as a wedding present to my husband. To my surprise, a photo from that shoot was chosen by the photographer to appear in a pinup magazine! I had never in my wildest dreams entertained the notion of being a model, but when I saw that magazine I thought, why can't I be a pinup model? And I haven't looked back since!"

Miss Dahl has been criticized by some and cheered by others for her gains and losses in weight over the years.  I personally prefer her with a little meat on her bones but I also think people should leave her to make her own decisions about what makes her feel comfortable in her own skin without ridicule or unflattering comments....And with that I present you this lovely pic for Vogue showcasing a slightly curvier Miss Sophie.

Real Life Vintage Wedding: Sara & Joe & Eliza

Vintage themed wedding Sara & Joe (& Eliza)

This past summer I had the pleasure of doing hair and makeup for Sara for her gorgeous vintage themed wedding in Paris.  Sara was such a pleasure to work with, as an actress I think she naturaly has a very winning personality and her style choices won me over immediately.
She had chosen a stunning 30's style satin gown and wanted to find a hair and makeup style to go along with that.  You know how much I like a good vintage styling session so this for me was a real treat.
I ended up doing a deep marcel wave and we accented the style with three art deco style clips on one side to add a little something sparkly!
I say Sara and Jo and Eliza because their adorable little girl was there on the day laughing and giggling as we got her mama ready for the big day.

Their ceremony was beautiful and I wish them all the happiness in the world!
