Pink Flamingo's ...How do I love thee!

I love me a good flamingo, who doesn't right!?  I have a special fondness for the silly pink creatures and the kitschy apparel and household items they adorn.  I recently came across a line of glasses at Ikea that had these fine feathered friends on them in a fun and funky retro style for only $1.49 a pop!!! Needless to say I want them!  (they also have some adorable pinapple glasses too, but that will have to wait for another post)
Here are a few of my favorite flamingo items I've come across lately.

Here are the super adorable Ikea glasses I mentioned!  I want many many many of them!
A buck and a half a piece!  Now how can you beat that!?

Ikea Pink Flamingo Glasses

I don't know why but I feel like the bathroom is the perfect place for flamingos..maybe it's the water..maybe it's just cause they're so adorable there.  Anyway, this one from habitat comes in at only $20 and would really spruce up your tub time.

Habitat Flamingo Shower Curtain

I absolutely fell in love with this flamingo wall paper from Cole & Son when I saw it in a design magazine in someone's office.  It's a lot more sophisticated and less kitschy than the most flamingo themed decor items and I think it makes it that much easier to cover entire walls with them without feeling overwhelmed by bright magenta closing in on you light a brighter one might.
It's a little pricey at $78 a roll, but it would make such a great statement it could be worth it if you have the budget or if you were only doing a small space it might not cost too much..
Either way the design is still so fun!

Cole & Son Flamingo Wall Paper

Ok, so maybe full walls covered in flamingo's aren't for everyone! (fools) but everyone has room for a little splash of flamingo here or there.
I love the bright pink sillouette pillow from Wayfari.
It's currently on sale for $29.99 and they offer free shipping on items over $49 so if you bought yourself a pair you could get them sent out to you for free!

Wayfair Flamingo Pillow

Lastly but not leastly I found this amazing pink flamingo lamp that I am mad for!
I love the art deco feel it has and the feahtered detailing in the body is fantastic.
It's hand painted and sculpted glass and it wants to live in my house!
It's a gorgeous piece that would light up any room (tada!  Lamp JOKE).
I found this little beauty through Amazon for only $100

Amazon Flamingo Lamp

Well I hope that feeds your flamingo lust as it did mine.
Any others out there in love with our fine florecent feathered friends?
Found any amazing pieces?

Judy Holliday

I've always loved the talented and hilarious Miss Judy Holliday since I was a kid and I fell in love with the musical Bells Are Ringing.
Unfortunately the lovely lady only made a few appearances on the silver screen before dying at an early age, a loss to viewing audiences everywhere if you ask me

Let's take a romantic and silly twirl down memory lane with Dino and Judy.
Watch this and and don't giggle...I dare you!

"For years I've struggled to find clothes that flatter my body shape, I don't want to wear something that looks like a tent! After seeing pictures of Dita Von Teese  I decided to look into the vintage style and fell in love, I brought a full circle dress and I've never looked back! "

God I love a redhead!  Course..maybe I'm a little biased ;)
Much Thanks to Siobhan and to all of my lovely reader submissions!
Keep 'em coming ladies!

Judi Dench

Many movie goers and certainly US audiences only know Miss Dench from her later films and subsequently know her only in her later years, but Judi has been wowing audiences on stage and the small screen for years and years before she ever made her break into hollywood screens.

Here I think Judi evokes the swinging 60's london era to a T in her little mini dress and knee boots and how perfect is her adorable little pixie crop...makes me tempted to cut my hair...Tempted.

Cass Elliot
 AKA Mama Cass

Cass Elliot of course best known for being one of the two female singers of the group The Mama's And The Papa's was a legend of her time and had a successful solo career as well.

Unfortunatley the songstress battled her weight most of her life and died all to young at 32 but still she left behind an amazing legacy of music for us to enjoy and some of her styles are just too fun!

Ricki Lake

Ricki Lake has gone up and down the scale over the years and is always lovely, but she will always be remembered for her iconic performance in the cult classic turned broadway musical turned movie again Hairspray.
The costumes and wigs in that film are just too fun, overblown exaggerations of 60's styles that make a gal wanna put on a wig and dance around her bedroom singing into a hairbrush..is that just me then..oh, yeah, no, just kidding, I didn't do that.
Yes, yes I did.

Dawn French
Miss Dawn French is in a word, HILARIOUS!  half of the comedy duo French and Saunders, co-creator of the spectacular show Absolutely Fabulous and Star of Vicar of Dibley she is a stunningly talented woman.
In their sketches she and Jennifer Saunders have portrayed many famous and iconic ladies over the years and it always amazes me what chameleons they are.
In a Gentleman Prefer Blondes Sketch they portray the lovely vintage vixens Marylin Monroe and Jane Russell..sure, different...but equally charming and glamorous!

And again I think Dawn French hits it out of the park during a scene playing the one and only Miss Elizabeth Taylor in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof.

Thoughts?  Comments?  Questions?

Roseanne Barr

Like her, love her, hate her or anywhere in between Roseanne was definitely a presence through most of my formative years and I was always a fan.  Watching Roseanne's show while growning up I always found her funny and I think She-Devil with Meryl Streep is such a hilarious film.

Here's a few pics of Miss Rosie letting her more stylish side shine through.

Top 5 Plus Size Burlesque inspirations

Ok, so everybody loves a pin-up and burly beauties have been making more and more of a splash as of late and having seen many many performers do amazing things you have to admit there is something so sexy about a gal all gussied up in naughty lingerie giving you the come-hither. So maybe you want to take it on stage or just do a private show around your bedroom I picked out a couple of treats that might wet your appetite.

Burlesque act come in all shapes and sizes and styles but they often share a few good staples like stockings and corsets.  As a burlesque dancer, creating your signature look is imperative to your routine. However, it can be hard to find sexy additions when you're plus size. The fit can be wrong, the lines can be unflattering or it simply just doesn't come in your size. While we shouldn't be dismayed or have less options just because we have a little more to give we often are because there aren't tons of retailers out there with Plus Size options and custom made goodies can run a bundle. In efforts to help, I've compiled a list of my top plus size picks offered by lingerie and sex toy stores like Adam & Eve Check some of these out and let me know what you think and where you head for some of your go-to plus-size burlesque outfits?
Some of these cuties could be taken the the stage as easily as to bed ;)

Who doesn't love wearing a corset? They hug you, squeeze you and emphasize you in all the right ways. However, they are pricy and typically have to be made to order. This garter dress is a great option for when you want to go a different route or are waiting for your corset to come in. It's perfect because the stretchy lace can accommodate any size and shape, while simultaneously showing off your beautiful curves. The fun part is that that built in stockings and garters mean you can lose it all in one go-round. Pair this outfit with a red push up bra and red panties.  This little beauty goes up to a size 20.

If the above isn't you're style, try this sexy garter slip that looks a little more like vintage lingerie. I liked this number because it has underwire bra cups to give you a little more support and stretchy satin panelling that will hug versus squish and wrinkle your curves. This cutie goes up to a size 16, be sure to check the size guide to match your bra size.  The lace trim on the bottom helps give it that classic look and who doesn't appreciate an outfit that comes with garters? Pair this slip with black thigh highs, heels and black thong.

Pasties are a great way to let it all hang out without really letting it all show. They're a classy way to dress up your girls and give your audience a little extra show. They are also conveniently a one-size only kind of dud, so size should never be an issue. While most pasties come with a sticky adhesive on the back, you'd be best served to use pastie glue with them as well. The adhesive is good if you're just wearing them out or hanging around the house, but if you're going to want back up re-enforcement if you're up on stage, dancing and sweating.

I suggest these if you need a new set a pasties, but thought the ones above were a little boring. These adorable bow pasties are connected by metal chain that adds a little weight and stimulation as it moves. Be aware of the length though. The chain is only 12 inches long, so it won't work if your nipples are more than 12 inches apart and it might not be ideal if you're planning to whirl them in circles, but at home these could be pretty fun! Pair these pretty pasties with a gartered skirt and cute bow-adorned stockings. Both of these pasties would also look great with the Tahiti Lace and Satin Garter Dress.
They've got heaps of pasties so if you're after those def worth a peak, the fluffy maribou feather ones are also quite devine!

Every burlesque girl needs a pair of classic back seam stockings. These vintage looking thigh highs are a throwback to the 1940's when back seam stockings were all the rage. Interestingly enough, the back seam existed not for style, but for construction purposes. Instead of sewing the whole thing together at the toe like stockings are commonly done now, they were reinforced at the back. Women who couldn't afford nylons or were in support of the war effort ban on silk and nylon then would simply draw a line up the back of their legs to give the allusion of back seam stockings, so finish your classic look with a nod to women of the 40's. They come in white and black and are such a steal, you could buy both!

So as you're painting your pucker cherry red and setting your pin curls don't forget to doll your pin-up girl self up from underbits out!

So what say you ladies?  Ready to get your inner burly betty out to play?

Mia Tyler of course the daughter of Steven Tyler and Sis to Liv is a plus size model of some note.  Her look often goes toward the more rock and roll and edge but of course as I tend to be inclined...I prefer her more vintage inspired looks

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett is one of those actresses that I am torn on...I feel like I should like her, she's curvy, and beautiful and she has a love and flair for pulling off vintage looks that should win me over and yet somehow I tend to find her a bit lackluster at the end of the day...ALMOST interesting but just not quite.

That aside I have to say she is a stunning woman with fab vintage creds so it wouldn't feel right not to pay props where due...I don't know, maybe it's just me?  What do you guys think?  You down with the Scar Jo?

Happy May Day my fine VVV friends!

As it is the tradition in France on the 1st of May to give Muguet (Lily of the valley for non-frenchies) as a gift of good luck and to celebrate the start of spring (if spring ever arrives that is!!!) but originally may day was a celebration of Labour workers, a labor day as it were...
Those dates have been moved around, some in May..America..for some reason in Sept but whatever the reason the traditions have lived on.  So pop out and get someone a little sprig or white wishes for the coming season :)
To celebrate I thought I'd share a little Muguet inspired vintage art!

Happy May Day!

The Flapper

Today I go sucked into a vortex.  You know the kind of thing I mean...
You know, where someone posts something on Facebook about female dancers of the turn of the last century and then you find yourself reading about how crizazy Zelda Fitzgerald was and fantasizing about how awesome her wardrobe must have been and you briefly consider bobbing your hair and think Midnight In Paris might be worth watching again....and isn't there a remake of The Great Gatsby coming out?....you know, that kind of vortex?
Oh Zelda you delightful crazy woman
But then I decided that not all vortex's must be a complete and utter waste of time and what better way to put my hours of internet putzing to use then to write a little something about my love for the 20's jazz era siren that is The Flapper and hopefully spur one of you on to your own vortex!

What is so great about the flapper you ask?  Well, just about everything.  For a short glistening moment in time while the world was between wars, overflowing with hot jazz, booze, new dance crazes, and young people had money and freedom like they had never had before.  The was a creature which emerged if only for a moment and burned the candle and both ends before eventually burning itself out and disappearing into war and economic depression as quickly as it came.
She was called the flapper.
But how could you spot the illusive creature in the wild?

The Hair

Well her hair was probably a dead giveaway.
Cropped off short,  often waved to the head with finger waves or a Marcel iron her crowning glory was now doubt her hacked off tresses which shouted that she was a new kind of woman ready to take the world it's trousers and drag it onto a dance floor.

The Dress

Her skirts were short and showed off her stockings and maybe even her garters if she was out on the dance floor Charlestoning up a storm!
Her girdle?  Long gone!
Her Bra?  What Bra!?
And those shoes!  Come a sister get a T-Strap!

The Hats

With different hair styles comes different hats and the flappers had their headbands and feathers but they also popularized a certain slouchy felt number that I just adore!

The Makeup

Their eyebrows were painted on lines often pencil thin and arched to within an inch of their life!
The lips were dark and bowed and adorable and for the first time (aside from on the stage) that women were wearing lots and lots of makeup!  Cheek rouge, lipstick, mascara and powder...these were some painted ladies and damned if they didn't look Divine!

So...take my internet meanderings and let them inspire you to let out your inner 1920's wild child!
Paint your face, hike up that skirt and hoist a cocktail to Moi!

Miss Hudson has had a roller coaster ride crash course in tinsel town craziness.  From her start on American Idol all to way to winning an Oscar for her roll in the movie musical Dreamgirls.

Jennifer's weight has bounced around a bit and mostly been on a downward trend since she hit the spotlight, but thin, thick or anywhere in between Lady has some pipes and a great sense of style.  Here are a few fab vintage inspired looks she's rocked as of late.

Top 5 Plus Size Vintage Inspired Swimsuits

I don't swim.  That's not to say that I can't swim...but that it is very rare to get me into the water.  There are many reasons for this.

1.  I don't like the ocean.  More precisely I like to look at the ocean but don't like to get into it.  You have currents that can pull you under, sand gets into every nook and cranny (and I don't know about you but I hate sand in my cranny) and there are about a bazillion creatures big and small that all freak me out and are on home turf so past my knees you probably won't get me into an ocean.

2.  I hate the sun.  More precisely I the sun doesn't like me, or if it does it has a very funny way of showing it!  More than 10 min out there SPF be damned and my milky white flesh turns a charming shade of lobster that I prefer in my bisque on not on my bosom.  So if I do swim it is most likely at night.

3.  And this one is the big one..I currently don't own a bathing suit.  This one is the real hitch in my giddy up. I have had many a marvelous suit at various times in my life...one particularly fabulous vintage suit I found with bird of paradise and bullet cups that has somewhere along the way disappeared like all the rest over the years.
And so for all of the reasons above I have decided that if in fact I am to be water bound again any time soon I am going to need to find THE suit.  The suit that makes me want to put it on and frolic in the moonlight (still not going out in the sun, not never not no how) and swim in a man made pool like the million dollar mermaid I know I have somewhere inside me.
And so in my search I have found many a lovely suit....I still haven't made my pick..maybe you can help.
Here are my Top 5 vintage inspired swim suits.
What say you?

1.  Modcloth - Bathing Beauty in Emerald Green. $89.99 Sizes 16-26
I really like this suit.  It comes in many colors and patterns but I am inclined to lean toward the green as I think it flatters my pale skin and looks bangin' with red hair.  The rutching is cute and a halter top is always the friend of a busty lady like myself.  At 90 bucks I find it a bit on the pricey side considering I'll probably pour myself into it twice a year...but it's definitely in my top picks for a great curve friendly vintage suit.

2.  Swim Suits For All - Swim Sexy Teal Aqua Floral $88 Sizes 10-24

This company has many many suits for larger sizes up to 34 and many of them have a vintage flair!  This suit first caught my eye for it's bold fun print.  I do like me a bold fun print.  The cut is really cute and the skirted bottom and twisted details at the bust give it two thumbs up from my retro lovers point of view.  It also has option for having the halter strap or wearing it as a bandeau style top so that is fun too.  It rocks in at about the same price as the Modcloth one so I'm still not 100% on board (cause I'm cheap OK!) but I definitely like it and had to put it on the list.

3.  B. Belle - Midnight One Shoulder Sarong Suit $88 But on sale for $38.40! Sizes 12-24W

This suit is so cute and on sale for under 40 bucks you can't really beat the price!  I love the single shoulder strap detail with the cute bow.  I do wish that it came in other colors though.  For someone as pale as myself I always feel like a black suit makes me look a little severe and pasty.  But even though it's probably not the suit for me I thought it was too cute not to pass on to you ladies.  It might be just the perfect fit!

4.  Monif C - Maldives Illusion Ruched Suit $188 Sizes 12W-24W

Ok, this suit is WAAAY out of my price range but it is too gorgeous and I love it toooooo much not to show it to you ladies.  Even though it is black the illusion of the nude color underneath makes it a lot softer and easier to wear without the black being too harsh.  The design just screams old Hollywood glam!  Monif C has amazing swim suits in two and one pieces.  Some of their bikinis are too adorable.  While I personally can't bring myself to spring for a suit that pricey considering how infrequently I will use it I have to say it is definitely at the top of my wish list!

5.  Walmart - Catalina Suddenly Slim  $33 Sizes 1X-3X

Okay so this suit is just too cute!  It comes in all sorts of colors and patterns.  There is black, navy, anchors, cherries, and my fav is the polka dots!  All the details of the ruching and the wide neck halter are great and the twist in the bust line all come together beautifully for a great overall effect.  The price is right up my alley, and though I generally wouldn't buy anything from Walmart as I am not a huge fan of the company I might make an exception if I were in the states.  Unfortunately for me I have not been able to find this suit shippable overseas sooooooo for now my search will have to continue :(

Also I'm excited to see the new collection of bikinis from the Fatshionista blogger Gabi Fresh.

I love this great galaxy designed high waisted bikini that she designed and can't wait for May 15th for the collection to become available on Swim Suits For All!  I'm not sure what sizes and prices will be like, but I am hoping that they will be fairly accessible t many of us.
Mark your calendars!

So ladies, while I may not have found my perfect suit yet, I have found a handful of suits that I think are all so adorable!  What say you gals?  Got a fav?
